Most of Downpatrick’s most famous attractions are within walking distance of Denvir’s. If you are staying in town, be sure to pay a visit to Downpatrick Cathedral, which is just a stone’s throw from Denvir’s. The Cathedral was built in 1790 on the Hill of Down, which is widely recognised as one of the most sacred Christian sites in Ireland. Erected on the site of an earlier 12th Century church, it is here that you can see the grave where Saint Patrick is reportedly buried.
Just across the road from Denvir’s you will find Down County Museum, housed in an 18th century building that was once Down County Gaol. The museum displays an interesting collection of exhibitions which chart the development of the area over the last 9000 years.
Explore the legacy of Patrick further in the afternoon at The Saint Patrick Visitor Centre, just one street away, with a series of interactive displays and an exhibition of the fabulous artwork and metalwork, which was produced around the time St Patrick lived.
If you still have time, head out to Inch Abbey which is less than 1 mile outside Downpatrick. The extensive ruins of a Cistercian Monastery founded in 1180 are set in a beautiful location beside the river Quoile.
